Summer Jam 2007, June 3
This year's Hip Hop 4 Life tour brought us to Summer Jam at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The ticket said "rain or shine" but it didn't keep the crowds away. You can see our booth in the Festival Village here with loads of wet guests stopping by to learn about organ and tissue donation--and get a free music download. Kidney donor Kellye Miller and her recipient Morgan Johnson took the stage at the Festival Village--now that's a friend!

We had a great day at Rutgers Busch Campus! It was the last stop on this year's tour but it won't be the last time you hear from us! Saying yes to organ donation is the right thing to do! Some of you will turn 21 this year and when you head down to Motor Vehicles to get that very important LICENSE - Make sure you tell them you want to be an organ donor! Life's for Sharing...Pass it on!

Students show off their dance steps during the Hip Hop 4 Life college tour stop at NJIT last week. They had a great time and so did we! This week the tour heads off to New Jersey City University in Jersey City. We'll be there on Thursday, September 14 from 11 a.m - 3 p.m. Look for the "Life's for Sharing...Pass it on" taxi cab and the HOT 97 Hummer! There'll be music, give aways and lots of great information on organ donation.

Tomorrow's the day- Wednesday, September 6th! The Hip Hop 4 Life college tour hits the road with its first stop at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark . NJ Sharing Network will be there from 12:30 - 5 pm with the Hot 97 DJs, terrific music and great giveaways! So take a break between classes and join us. It's a great way to relax after the first stressful days of getting back into the college groove. You'll have fun and find out how you can save lives.

Organ donation has become a common theme in our popular culture. Whether you are watching a movie like "John Q" or TV shows like "Grey's Anatomy" or "House", the process of organ donation makes its way into our consciousness. This increased awareness can be very helpful, but it also brings greater possibility of myths and misconceptions creeping into our decision-making. Sometimes it's difficult to distinguish between a great story line and the truth. Myths and misconceptions about organ donation also stem from cultural beliefs, distrust of the medical establishment or even urban legends. For the 90,000 people on the waiting list for an organ, cutting through misinformation is a matter of life and death.

Here 's one of the most common myths about organ donation.
MYTH
If I am admitted to the hospital and they are aware that I have signed a donor card, I will not be treated as aggressively because of the need for organs.
FACT
The decision to sign a donor card will in no way affect the level of medical care for a sick or injured person. The team of doctors and nurses involved in treating the patient is not involved with the transplant/recovery team, which is called in only after death has occurred.

What is Hip Hop 4 Life? Well, it starts with an event but it’s really a shout out to students and young people about the importance of organ and tissue donation. It’s easy to do something amazing—save a life. Just say yes to organ donation on your NJ driver’s license. You can also sign up at one of our stops on the college tour. The college tour is traveling to three schools this year (see August 22 blog entry for the details.) NJ Sharing Network has a great partner, Hot 97, New York’s #1 station for Blazin’ Hip-Hop and R&B. So check us out on campus and meet one of Hot 97’s celebrity DJs. (See the photo of Hip Hop 4 Lifers with Fat Man Scoop--third from left-- at Rutgers last year.) Life-saving transplants are needed by people of all ages. As of this month, there are about 3,000 people on New Jersey’s transplant waiting list. 277 of them are 34 years old or younger and 17 of those are under the age of 18. Don’t forget, life’s for sharing….pass it on!
